PARIS HILTON’S CELL PHONE (unauthorised version)
Image by Somerset, Oh and Rhode
For instance, why is there not numerous versions of the nexous one? A version for AT&T, Verizon, T-mobile, and Sprint. Or the Iphone. Or enV 3.
I know different cell phone companies require different hardware. But why does, for instance, motorola make completely different phones for Verizon and AT&T. Why not just change the hardware?
Answer by Miss B
Phone companies negotiate to get the best phones.
AT&T has the iPhone and im sure they have new customers now b/c of the phone.
If each company had the same phone then there would be no competition.

In the case of the iPhone, AT&T had an exclusivity deal, as with other providers in other countries. But theses deals run out after a while like in the UK everywhere it was on 1 carrier it is now on 4 of the 5 huge ones. Soon you may be able to get a Verizon (or Sprint, or T-Mobile) iPhone. That is one of the common reasons.
The Nexus One is having versions for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon coming out soon. AT&T 3G was doubtless held back by Google not wanting to interfere with AT&T’s smartphone range in anticipation of they launch their authoritative Android phones. And the CDMA versions for Verizon and Sprint aren’t finished yet.
Also, the concept that you do not get a choose the carrier and then the phone, you choose the phone and the carrier comes with it, is most common these days. In the UK, 3rd party stores sell phones with a choice of carrier (Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2, etc.) and I take upon yourself it is the same crosswise the rest of Europe, for the simple reason that all the networks are fully compatible. So this is really just something that happens within the USA, one of the few countries everywhere the cell networks are not compatible. So you can’t just pick-and-choose your phone and carrier.
Of course it would be cheaper overall to make different versions of one phone for all carriers, but the carriers want to make more money off exclusive phones.

Because, cell phone companies try to get the best cell phones. I am sure most of them wouldn’t want the same phone that all other phone companies have, they need cell phones that attract others. If they all had the same cell phones the only reason people would join is because of prices, which a lot of people join cell phone companies from what phones they have. And, trust me, changing the hardware/software is not so simple. It can take a while.
It’s just the way the world works.
Logan.
