Is it legal for a school principal to turn on a confiscated phone and recieve text messages and read them?
Today, my cell phone was confiscated by a teacher in my high school. Of course it was against the rules for me to have my phone powered on and texting, but when I handed my phone to the woman I powered it off and she took it to the office. Later on I was called down to the office and the principal claimed that the phone had “just started vibrating on the desk” and two text messages were recieved. I am absolutely sure, as I and everyone else in the class witnessed me turn the phone off, meaning that the principal turned it on himself. The principal promptly wrote down the content of the messages and questioned me on who they were from, and what they were about. I am not trying to evade the detentions I was given, but I feel that my rights as a person have been violated by the Principal, and I would like to know just for personal assurance that what he did was wrong. I am a 16 year old boy, attending a public high school.

YOu are subject to school board policy. I’m sure it’s legal.
Next time leave the phone at home and it’s no issue,
Answer by Bankykun
I do not believe that he has the right to invade your privacy like that.
Answer by Barry C
You might feel your rights were violated, but you would be wrong.
any individual rights you might or might not be entitled to are easily overridden by the school’s need to deliver a safe and secure environment for learning.
just so you know, having your bags and lockers searched to is legal, so leave stuff that is not needed for school at home.
or hidden in the bushes at that house on the way to school

No different from the teach picking up a note being passed and reading it to the class… Jus newer technology.

if it makes you feel better it might not be completely by the books legal, but it wont hold up to anyone but yourself and maybe your parents. i would not worry myself about it and try to remember not to use your phone during class, or at least dont get caught.
What do you think? Answer below!
This will ensure that products like mobile phones and PDAs don’t get damaged easily. For example, a plastic iPod is highly vulnerable to being dropped, cracked and scratched. However, if such products have metal exteriors, they cannot break easily. Therefore, why hasn’t companies begun manufacturing everything from laptops to cell phones with metal covers? I would not mind having a metal PSP or iPod, and have assurance that it is nearly indestructible if it falls.
Answer by Axis777
Well, because it’s cheaper for them to make them plastic. And if it breaks, then you have to buy a new one right? More money for “them”. It’s really that plain and simple : P

It mostly because of cost,
but also because of weight.
An Ipod shuffle would probably weigh alot more if it had
a metal exterior versus a plastic exterior.

manufacturers and companies go through a lot of concept ideas before coming up with a final product and while i cant be sure myself why they wouldn’t use metal instead of plastic as its the companies themselves choice.
one would of course be weight while many people would night mind having a heavier device it is not just the consumers that have problems with weight as when a company ships it products many methods will have a fee based on weight so if you were shipping say 100 plastic devices and they all weighed 1 lb against 100 metal devices that weighed 2 lb the fee for shipping would be higher for every load therefore the consumers price would go up.
second is that it costs a lot more to make something out of metal than plastic, and to mass produce these to consumer needs would be a lot more expensive, causing consumer prices to go up
third might be the properties of metal and plastic themselves. and device with moving parts internally would be at a disadvantage with metal because metal will bend and keep that shape while most hardened plastic will just break off or crack while this may not seem like much if it does have moving internal parts the bent metal could cause problems within the device itself and would cause more serious damage to your device than a cracked exterior.
these may not be reasons why they would make something out of plastic but just things that i would consider if i was a manufacturer myself.
