What's the best way to get affordable use (calls, texts, data) from my UK iPhone in the USA for 5 months?

What's the best way to get affordable use (calls, texts, data) from my UK iPhone in the USA for 5 months?

US travel is Feb-July 2010
I’m on a £35 per month UK O2 contract that lasts until August 2010
I’ve looked into the rates that would apply to using the phone on that contract and it’s scary
I’ve been assuming usage of: 100 x 2min calls, 100 xSMS, 250MB data per month
I’ve thought about getting hold of a non-iPhone smart phone in the USA but am kind of iPhone habituated/addicted (mostly using phone, camera, email, tweetie, facebook, maps, messages, google)
I’ll be travelling for work in a lot of different states throughout the 5-month spell in the USA
I also have two other colleagues who will need US cell phones of some kind (not necessarily iPhones) and we will be using these partly to keep in touch with each other and partly for contacting the USA and UK
Last time we were working in the USA we used really annoying AT&T GoPhones that were hellish difficult to register and set up and beeped to tell us how much it cost even to receive an SMS or a call
I don’t understand unlocking but would be prepared to do it – or have it done for me – if it made sense
Hope this is enough info. It’s something I just wish were simpler!

I would contact AT&T in the States and see if you could get a temporary contract with a SIM card that would work in your iPhone. Alternatively, O2 may have an international plan that you could add for the 5 months of travel.

You want so much for Christmas already. Holidays are for getting around family and friends and enjoying yourself. Think about what you will give for Christmas more than what you will receive and you might enjoy the results more.
