Why is it illegal to operate a cell phone while driving?

…When it is still perfectly legal to eat a sandwich, use your TomTom or Garmin, or operate your exceptionally complex aftermarket stereo system? Do you see where I’m going with this? I’ve even seen public shave or read a book while in their morning commute!!! If you’re going to make a law, do it right. The point is to keep public’s concentration on driving, so do it. A law prohibiting only cell phone or “hand-held devices” is like a band aid on a gun wound… I’d like to hear some Intelligent rationale for the contrary….
To CR who said it takes more concentration to talk than push buttons. There’s a slight hole in your theory. Hands-free devices have been made so public may maybe talk on their phones. The hard issue aver is the holding a phone, which I personally don’t agree with. Most public drive one handed anyways.

Persons others should be illegal as well, but that’s not a reason to not have cell phones illegal.

1) There are public on them ALL THE TIME, non stop. That trumps a few seconds pushing a stereo or GPS button.

2) It takes concentration to talk more than pushing buttons.

Because of the number of public who are doing that and getting into accidents. Texting is the same as reading a book while driving, only worse, because it takes two hands to respond to a text. They have done studies that show using a cell phone while driving is the equivalent of driving drunk.

By they way, in California it is illegal to eat and drive at the same time. And the additional activities are rare and don’t need a special law. They can be stopped for negligent driving.

It is not illegal in NC but texting while driving is illegal. “Careless driving” laws are there to take in all the stupid driving lifestyle we have. According to the insurance industry handheld devices are involved in the increase of accidents. why would the insurance industry have any reason to lie about cell phones. I am always distracted when I am on my phone but I answer it anyway, I have never read a book or place on makeup but I have eaten a burger which is distracting too. We have to start somewhere & cellphones do not mix well with driving. Plus you can just pull off the road if you need to make a call & save a life maybe mine.

Currently iPhone by default offers Google maps navigation. It is not turn-by-turn, but is still very useful and have many additional features like community search that Garmin and TomTom do not. iPhone GPS is especially useful in USA. If you want turn-by-turn solution on iPhone you can buy TomTom iPhone application for about $ 100.
