All Cell phone companies: Are early termination fees illegal?

All Cell phone companies: Are early termination fees illegal?

I recieved a class action letter in the mail for numerous different cell phone companies stating if I have paid these fees, it is illegal and I may be free to a refund. Has the law altered? Are “ETF’s” illegal now? I didn’t reckon congress passed anything like that yet.

Answer by evilattorney
A California court held that they were. In response, the carriers are now issuing credits for each month of the contract that’s been completed. Congress has not acted on EFTs yet.

Apple reinvents the phone. Imagine Apple’s typically simple to use computer software interface, like a touchscreen keypad when you need to dial. When you want to watch a video, it’s got a screen larger then the Video iPod. Suddenly, the phone interface isn’t flat and rigid, it’s fluid and molten. Software replaces hardware. The traditional phone is obsolete for all the things it’s be converted into. This integrated device is driven by a mini-computer with a web browser that displays regular websites instead of the stripped down versions of all phones and mobile devices now. It also happens to be a phone, a camera, and a video iPod as well. Apple is hoping that the iPhone takes off like it’s iPod forefather. Now, Apple stocks went up while cell phone companies’ went down crosswise the board.

I am out of contract and looking for a new phone. My carrier (Centennial) desires to charge a $ 20 fee (on top of the phone price) to get a new phone. Do all carriers do that?

I wouldn’t call this “Network Transferring”, unless your switching to a different network carrier while your contract is still valid.

But if your contract with centennial is over, and you wanted to renew your contract, they ought to charge you only for the phone. Or, at least, that’s been my exp. with T-mobile and Cingular (AT&T). I simply renewed my contract, and they just charged me for the phone. It’s just like export a new plot with a different company.

So in essence, to answer your question, no. Not all carriers do that.
