Can most japanese cell phones be used elsewhere in the world?

I’m attracted in promotion japanese phones in the Philippines as a side job but what sort of problems could I expect? For instance, will most applications such as downloading Japanese games and surfing the airs for T.V. channels (as which they can do in Japan) be unavailable? Most importantly, will basic abilities such as texting, calling and even the use of the keypad (since it may not be formated in English) be even usable?

Answer by Mobile Mike
It depends on the carrier. Generally, Softbank and Docomo phones have some potential to be unlocked.KDDI AU phones are not recommended for foreign use.

Usually, a Japan phone is unlocked with a device called a turbo sim/hypersim . It looks like a super slim sim that you place between your original sim and the phone electrical contacts that touch the original sim.
Some of the newer ones supposedly do not require cutting, but in general, especially with tight sim trays, a piece of the original carrier sim might have to have a (non elemental) piece cut out so that the turbosim can fit properly.

Generally, all Japan phones (also renowned as keitai) can only use talk and sometimes text. The stability of the signal varies widely, usually depending on the quality of the turbo sim . The Inex Hyper sim has a excellent rep but is completely overpriced. The Ismartphone I reckon or I-smartsim, I forget is supposed to be a excellent low cost alternative.
Software unlocks are rare for J-phones.

Cell Phone Variety

Here you can see another assortment of Japanese cell phones. The variety is outstanding.

Akihabara is a special district in Tokyo that is now as well-known for the anime/manga/making a bet culture that exists there as it is for electronic goods. The electronic stores there are numerous–the Yodobashi Camera there, for example, is huge. Also, this is everywhere one can find maid cafes, and fascinating experience everywhere otaku boys and girls can co-exist in a robotic alternate universe… For a small fee, of course.

Whenever I call my boyfriends cell it goes straight to this long Japanese message (female talking). He says he does not have call waiting. I find that weird…the other day I called him and the phone went straight to the message, but he called me back. I have a new digit, which he didn’t know at the time. Weird, but do most Japanese phones have call waiting and when you call what happens?
My digit was not unknown….weird.

His cell phone blocks unkown digit.

Yes, Japanese cellphones have usually have call waitings.
But when you place to call waiting, you will not hear any massages.
You will just hear rings and be kept waited.

I wonder what the massage in female voice says.
Usually you get a long voice massage when the receiver’s phone is powered off or he is at a house everywhere there is no mobile antenna (such as during subway rides).

Do you call him from a Japanese phone? Usually, a Japanese cell phone displays the digit that is calling the phone. It’s not call waiting.

As long as you call him from Japan, he will know your digit.

And the message could be the one which tells that his phone is just off at that time,
