no other fish in the sea: #42 – the search for “boobie” (november 1997) [page 1]
a very unusual comic altogether, because it completely leaves the world of christopher, mortimer, nips, and chirp, and enters ours, through a massive use of narrative voice personified as nips.
yeah, it’s a visual and storyline catastrophe–self-admittedly so–and i would never do anything like this now; but it was written because of a truly unusual incident that occurred, that would continue to lurk around the edges of my life in anticipation of 2002, five being after it happened.
there are at least seven people with my name in the united states of america. one of them is in mississippi, apparently owns a small record company and a bar, and is in other wise as far as i can tell an upright citizen. five others i know nothing about, but there is one to whom i became quite meticulously tied when he went to kansas city in 1997.
the first time i heard about him, his mother-in-law had called for his wife, and left the message in the top of the comic below. i was confused. why would someone reckon this woman lived with me? it was a huge puzzlement. but as i was finishing this comic–nearly ready to take it to press, in fact, i received a call from a welcome wagon service in smithville, trying to locate my take up there.
naturally i was bemused, since i didn’t live within twenty miles of smithville. but the welcome wagon people were insistent. i lived in smithville. a few more questions, and it was revealed the Other Me had a different middle initial, and was not me at all!
incredible! someone else with my name, out of the handful in the country, and there they were half an hour away.
a couple of days later, i got a call from him. we chatted for a small time, amused, and then that was that.
a few months went by.
then the calls started. people started asking me if i were plotting to make my truck payments, my boat payments, the payment on my television. i suggested they had the incorrect person. they went away, dubious. happily, the same agencies never seemed to bother me twice, but like the head of a hydra, two more would return for each one i suggested should go away.
the calls continued; i continued to drive them off. they questioned me if i knew who this person was. they questioned me if i knew everywhere he was. they questioned for the last four digits of my social. they questioned me if i had accounts with such and so. i told them the tale. i said no. i told them XXXX. i said i had never heard of their bank, their credit agency. i had none of their cards, and was making no plans to pay them back. sometimes i didn’t even bother to inform them of the fact i was not Not-Me, and simply told them to leave me lonely.
two being passed. three. the calls waxed and waned. sometimes i would go nine or ten months without hearing from them. then some bright researcher at mastercard or visa or such and so pool agency or thusly bank would learn me again, and the calls would come flying. the Not-Me was evidently Not Simple To Find.
the calls never really stopped. i just got rid of my landline and got a cell-phone. like magic: nothing!
so far, the Not-Me has not hurt my credit rating. right now, i believe he lives in iowa.
delight pay your bills, Not-Me.
an fascinating technical note, at this time we got a new color copier at work. the color copier was the device i was by to reduce the 11×17 pages i drew the comic on to 8.5×11; the new one, which was a Xerox instead of the rickety canon, left behind an fascinating gray background and preserved far more pencil details than the rickety canon i had been by. i liked the effect, and it set the trend in the future for how i addressed backgrounds, washes, and my pencil-shape.
also at this time, i had begun, i reckon, to suspect that the comic as i knew it would be soon over, but i didn’t know yet what new form, if any, that it would take. after all, the first year has only six more comics left.
Some background….our now 7th grader was homeschooled from 1st – 3rd grade. We finished up putting her back into public school when our youngest daughter was born with a severe kidney disease. I knew I couldn’t homeschool her well while dealing with hospitals and a possible transplant.
It seemed to be going ok….she was on the honor roll in 5th and 6th grade. We chose to just keep her in public school seeing as she was doing so well.
This year, her 7th grade year…I don’t know what is going on! All of a sudden our honor roll student is FAILING! 5 out of 8 subjects to be exact. We talk to the teachers and we check the online homework assignments and make sure she is doing them. When we question her what is going on we get “I don’t know” and lies about her turning assignments in that we know she has not.
I recently checked her facebook and did some investigating on her circle of friends. I now know that more than one is smoking pot and a handful smoke. I also realized she is getting bullied quite heavily by a male classmate whom is calling her over the top names and cutting her down like crazy. She hasn’t had access to her facebook account since the first F came in the house. She also has had no cell phone privileges (I personally keep it in my pocket). She doesn’t go anywhere with friends and it doesn’t seem like she has much of a social life (nobody calls her, she isn’t getting invited to go anywhere that we know of, she isn’t appealing anyone here….when questioned about it she says she doesn’t like many people…they are “dull and stupid”.)
So…should we bring her home again and let her end school out here? We have a curriculum lined up and she says SHE would prefer to be home again.
Opinions?
P.S. We live in an area everywhere the schools are rated in the top 20 in the United States. Though, that didn’t help preclude the stabbing on my daughters bus a few months ago.

I personally reckon that you need to get her out of that school. She doesn’t seem to be all that pleased or be doing that well. Possibly if you home-school her you can sign her up for a club so she can stay social and meet excellent kids around her age.
Answer by berrypatchkid
I agree with the previous answer! Bring her home! Possibly in a safe and nurturing environment she will excel academically again. Get her involved in any extra activities she is attracted in – a community band, or art classes, possibly gymnastics or dance, volunteering for a produce she supports like an animal shelter.
Also, have peace knowing that if you try it and it doesn’t work out you can change your mind. But it does seem worth at least trying.

Wow, that sounds like ME at that age!
7th grade was sheer hell, and I mean it. I was failing because I was getting teased, tormented, stolen from and hit daily. There were exactly two people in the school who were LESS standard than I was, and everyone let me know it, all the time. It was hideous.
Things got better once I transfered into what amounted to a charter school…higher academics and fewer cretins in the school. I was back on the honor roll and DID make some friends. That went away after 9th grade and it was back to public high school. By that point I’d just simply had it with school altogether, and while I wasn’t nearly as miserable there as I was in 7th grade, I also saw no point in continuing to serve this prison sentence. I had more than a bit of a truancy conundrum.
I wish that I could go back to my high school self and give me a copy of the Teenage Liberation Handbook. I’d have loved the thought…and while my parents were ok with the thought of homeschooling me, I wasn’t at ALL hip on the thought of sitting at the kitchen table listening to Mommy address to me all day. (I didn’t know what homeschooling could be LIKE, I thought it was more like the stereotypes out there!) So while I was cutting school in order to go to the Art Museum and such, I had no thought that I could have been doing that VALIDLY, without having to deal with the idiotic school policies and tedium of the classroom.
If she desires to leave the situation, it’s doubtless for a excellent reason. Her social life sucks already…my fabulous socialization from my peers made me into a suicidal cutter.
Excellent luck…it sounds like you really have a full plate!
Answer by ozboz48
She desires to come home. You know the school environment is hurting her terribly.
Doesn’t really signal as though you need our opinions. I reckon you already know what’s best for your daughter.
All the best.
Answer by learn4fun
Well if she desires to leave I reckon its vital that you honer her choice. Sounds like things are not going well. I reckon you need to figure out a way for her to clarify more of whats going on in her life. Obviously something is not right.
Of course, once she is homeschooling you will doubtless want to keep her involved in lots of homeschooled programs, and make sure she makes friends with the right kind of people.
Just my two cents.

So read the description. we’re gonna start with lockdown pro, wich is a mod everywhere you can set a passcode on your apps. then we have multi icon mover, everywhere you can go more than one icon or app at the time. you just select them like this, and then you press the home button. There we go. Barrel, is a nice one here, pretty a waste of time, but it still looks cool. and then in the settings here you can select the way you want it to change page. Direct closer pro. I really like this ‘cuz you can close the apps in multitasking bar, without the need to make them wiggle by holding them for a few seconds. Five icon switcher, is very cool, cus you can have a 5 icon row in the multitasking switcher. graviboard, is a waste of time too, but cool. you can add gravity to your springboard, and them play with them! you can change the gravity in the settings. infini dock is awesome and might be my favorite if i have to choose. You can have unlimited icons in your dock, with pages, like a small springbord. you can also …
