Q&A: Is it always necessary to purchase a new cell phone when switching providers? What is a SIM card?

I would like to switch cell phone providers to get better service? Do I always have to buy a new phone from the new provider? What is a SIM card and how is it used. I use prepaid phone service by the way.

Now I am not sure on how correct I am but here is some help…. if the phone is compatible you might not have to … however if going to or from cingular they have a sim card (it is what is used to make your phone work, saves your contacts and gives service to phone) I am not sure if any other phone companies use them, but what is great is you can switch phones w/ cingular easily with them. If you purchase a go phone (prepaid) you can use a plan later w/ same sim card different phone. So far I have found Cingular the best to deal with even though they do have some issues but by far best for money. I hope this answered some of your questions.

Only if you use a carrier using GSM system. Then you can have one phone and change a SIM card ( a small intelligent card of a size of a post stamp that you put inside a phone) each time you want to change carrier or go overseas and want to use a local carrier.
