Well, the most well loved Japanese cell phones are made by Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, NEC, etc. But each company releases several new phones every season, so it’s hard to say which models are well loved.
Now, here are some problems with your plot:
1) It’s really hard, if not impossible, to get a Japanese cell phone to work with a non-Japanese service provider. Nearly all cell phones in Japan are made by Japanese companies, but as I’m sure you’ve noticed, none of them sell phones outside of Japan (the Sony-Erikson partnership excepted). One reason is the systems are too different.
2) It’s really hard, if not impossible, to buy an unlocked cell phone without a service contract. Each model is normally tied to a specific carrier, even if this is supposed to exchange in the future.
3) It’s really hard, if not impossible, to buy a cell phone in Japan at all unless you’re at least a resident (not just a tourist) of Japan.

So basically, I would probably try to reckon of a better birthday present. Even if you may maybe somehow get one and get it to work, it would be an expenisive PITA.

What do you reckon? Answer below!

So recently my cell phone was stolen. Now were looking at one to replace it. Now I have my eye on an unlocked Japanese phone, but am wondering if I can use it with the plot i have in the states. Is there any way this can be done?

I’m reasonably sure you can as long as your carrier supports the frequency the phone uses. I would do a search and make sure before I buy.
