Is it a bad idea to sign up for a new cell phone contract just to get the free phone and then cancel?

I found a website that will give me the AT&T phone I want for free if I sign up for a new service. Can I do this, and then just cancel straight away and keep the phone? I know there will be a $ 175 abandonment fee, but the phone costs more than that, so it still seems like a deal to me. Will I have to pay for a whole month of service?

yes there is a required amount of time you must be on the contract before you can cancel. or they will charge you the full price of the phone plus abandonment fee.

its a terrible thought b/c u have to pay the fee and u have to pay the first month and u have to pay an upgrade fee that comes w/ the phone, which would whole to about 240 or something like that

There is no abandonment fee as long as you cancel within a certain time frame. find out what the time frame is, sign up, get the phone and then cancel. There is a set up fee initially but for the most part, it is much less expensive than the gear. I’ve done this a few times.

If you cancel within the first 30 days, you must restore the phone or you will be billed the retail price of the phone.
