Going through confiscated cell phones at school an invasion of privacy?

Going through confiscated cell phones at school an invasion of privacy?

My high school’s administration has begun to read public’s text messages in order to find out who they’ve text during school, so they can then take their phones. Is this legal? If so what supports it? I live in the commonwealth of Kentucky. If it’s illegal, what laws or codes does it violate? Our student body as a whole opposes our administration’s delving into of our privacy. What do you reckon?

Answer by BabyGirlx0x;;
this is exceptionally incorrect of them to do and a huge invasion of privacy .
im pretty sure that this is illegal .

Answer by jdw
Our school does the same. Schools have a right to make a rule against allowing phones. I am a teacher and cell phones have become a whole distraction of the education process. They need to be banned entirely from schools, then we wouldn’t have to worry about the administration seeing your messeges.

yes i reckon they should have some privacy at least with their phone its personal

No way its really legal. Remember persons kids whose phones were taken away, and they got in distress because they have naked photos of their boyfriends and girlfirends and stuff? When we confiscate phones at school, we just view the pictures to see whose phone it is. I never thought about viewing text messages. But its an brilliant thought. Plus, once its confiscated, u will probably never get it back, hence, its not urs. We make EVEYR SINGLE ONE OF OUR STUDENTS sign an agreement that they will not bring cell phones to school, and if they do it will be taken away. Parents SOMETIMES get them back if they push hard enough. But why bring a phone to school anyway? You dont need it, so why bring it? Its distracting, and kids dont usually need one.

It is illegal. Place locks on your phones and then nobody can get on them. It violates the right to privacy.

I know, some principal knows the teens sex lives here, and then claims its okay for a boy to hit a girl. Scum. Glad his dad is much different. He makes fake claims they are only students yet noses around in their teenage sex lives. He is perverted.

I need reasons why cell phones should be allowed in school.

Answer by cubsfreak2001
It was once discussed that cell phones should be turned off, and they may maybe be used in emergency when students were displaced, such as the school shootings, where cell phones have played key roles in letting parents find students and also students to call 911 with information on place of suspects and details of injured students.

I can’t give you any. As a rule the world isn’t any less of a safe place for kids than 5-10 years ago.

in my school, nearly every kid in school owns a cell phone [some are VERY high-tech!] they’re allowed in school coz they can easily help you contact your parents or drivers.. we sometimes use them for our cameras for some school activity..
but all phones must be kept in silent mode or switched off during class hours.. cell phones may be used during free periods [like recess]

in my additional school, the advisers would collect your cell phones before actual class started. if ever you needed to call or text, you go to the teacher & question permission.. but that was only allowed during recess..

cell phones can really help you out in communicating others.. some phones have features that can help you in school.. :)
