Cell phones & School?
Ok , my little sister got suspeneded from school for the 5 days because of an incident in class involving a cell phone :
her and two other girls were in class , they had a sub teacher and they were watching a movie. now , my sis carries a purse so usually she’ll just reach into the purse with out taking her phone out if she wants to check a msg or something like that ; basically to hide it in school because if they see you with it they will take it .
i guess my sis sent the two other girls a fwd and they wanted to read it but one of the girls couldnt receive it b/c she had no service. my sis asked to see her phone. . the girl handed my sis the phone and my sis tried to hide it under her arm b/c an administrater walked in the room. in between the time the girl handed her the phone and her trying to hide it , she did nothing with it, she didnt look at the phone nor did she go through the phone to find anything. it was literally 2 seconds in my sisters hand and her trying to hide it when the administrater told her to come in the hall way ; btw , the administr was there for a totally different reason.
to make a long story short she got suspened for a phone that wasnt hers. and when the phones owner came in to give the phone to the adminstr he wouldnt take it. he wanted my sister to give her phone to him but she wouldnt and our mom told him he wasnt going to get her phone because she pays the bill.
so basically it changed from the administr saying she was playing with the phone when he walked in the class room [a phone thats not even hers] to him trying to turn the situation around to make it seem like she was playing with her personal phone , him catching her, and her giving her phone to him or refusing to.
i think he suspened her for no reason because the phone wasnt her, she didnt have her personal phone out . if he wanted to suspend someone for the phone it should hv been the owner because she was the one who took the phone out in the beginning. & there were only 4 days of school left and finals were coming up and he suspended her – thats messing with her education. now she has to take all of her finals in one day.
do you think this situtation should be taking to a higher level of authority ?
your right, i dont think it should be turned into a law suit. i just think they should eliminate the suspension and allow her to attend the last couple of days so she can take her tests without them being crammed into one day. 4 finals in 1 day ? on top of that , the school is closing after this year ! & in the student hand book , hving a cellphone during school hours is a 1-3 level violation 1- warning , 2- parent conference, 3- ISS. my mom’s suppose to be going to the head administrative office monday to see what can be done abt it – thank you everyone for responding !

wow getting suspened for a phone? here they just take the phone away

First of all , there’s no reason why she should get suspended .. i understand maybe taking away thaa phone but they made a big deal about it, their idiots.

While suspending may be a bit extreme, it is likely in the school handbook that phones aren’t allowed on the ground at all and that students seen with them will be faced with consequences. Again, suspension is a bit extreme, but as long as it’s in the school handbook I honestly don’t see a problem with what the administrator did. Your sister does use her phone in class, and even though it wasn’t her phone she’s the one that asked to see it, and then tried to hide it. It sounds to me like she knew she was doing something wrong. Don’t turn this into some stupid lawsuit. Your sister broke the rules and got punished, the last thing schools need right now is to lose money for stupid stuff. All that will happen is the school will have to make cuts and they will be even stricter with phones in their handbook to avoid this kind of thing in the future.

This is a continuation of Flickr sets that I created in 2010 (shown here), 2009 (shown here), and 2008 (shown here) — which, collectively, illustrate a variety of scenes and people in the small "pocket park" known as Verdi Square, located at 72nd Street and Broadway in New York City’s Upper West Side, right by the 72nd St. IRT subway station.
I typically visit a local gym once or twice a week, and I get there by taking the downtown IRT express from my home (at 96th Street) down to the 72nd Street stop. Whenever possible, I try to schedule an extra 30-60 minutes to sit quietly on one of the park benches, and just watch the flow of people coming in and out of the park — sometimes just passing through, to get from 72nd Street up to 73rd Street, but mostly entering or exiting the subway station.
You see all kinds of people here: students, bums, tourists, office workers, homeless people, retired people, babysitters, children, soldiers, sanitation workers, lovers, friends, dogs, cats, pigeons, and a few things that simply defy description. Sometimes you see the same people over and over again; sometimes they follow a regular pattern at a particular time of the day.
If I focus on the people entering the park at 73rd Street, and walking southwards toward the subway entrance, I typically have five or ten seconds to (a) decide if they’re sufficiently interesting to bother photographing,(b) wait for them to get in a position where I can get a clear shot of them, and (c) focus my camera on them and take several shots, in the hope that at least one or two of them will be well-focused and really interesting.
While you might get the impression that I photograph every single person who moves through this park, it’s actually just the opposite: the vast majority of people that I see here are just not all that interesting. (It’s not that they’re ugly, it’s just that there’s nothing interesting, memorable, or distinctive about them.) Even so, I might well take, say, 200 shots in the space of an hour. But some of them are repetitive or redundant, and others are blurred or out-of-focus, or technically defective in some other way. Of the ones that survive this kind of scrutiny, many turn out to be well-focused, nicely-composed, but … well … just "okay". I’ll keep them on my computer, just in case, but I don’t bother uploading them.
Typically, only about 5-10% of the photos I’ve taken get uploaded to Flickr — e.g., about 10 photos from a one-hour session in which a thousand, or more, people have walked past me. There are some exceptions to this rule of thumb, as was the case with this particular set — but nevertheless, what you’re seeing it is indeed only a tiny, tiny subset of the "real" street scene in New York City. On the other hand, it is reassuring to see that there are at least a few "interesting" people in a city that often has a reputation of being mean, cold, and heartless…

In general . . .
1. Cellphone – Yes.
2. Clothing – Yes, but excluding underwear, bras or socks.
3. Small appliances – Only a microwave or something that doesn’t actually hold food/water.
4. Bath towels – No.
5. Vehicles – Yes.
6. Pets – Yes.
7. Canned foods – I wouldn’t *pay* for these second-hand, no.
8. Computers – Yes.
9. Furniture – Yes.
10. Camping equipment – It depends on what you mean by “equipment”. NO to bedding or appliances!
It really depends, though. I would buy a second-hand phone of a friend or family member, but probably not from an Op-Shop. I love shopping at Op-Shops for clothes and for the most part, the clothes you find there are in pretty good condition. There are the occasional torn or stained items, but I have found numerous desginer pieces in pristine condition for $ 5 or less when they would cost well over $ 50 – $ 100 if I were to buy them brand new. The same goes for furniture – some is tacky and some is great, but you don’t know what’s available unless you start looking
A hell of a lot of the things in my bedroom are second-hand (either from Op-Shops or handed down from family/friends) and you wouldn’t have even guessed. Every piece of furniture besides my bed cost next to nothing and were then painted to match each other, along with matching handles screwed in. I have a vintage-looking Moulin Rouge posterboard, a neon Playboy clock, candleholders; all for either a fraction of the orignal price or free. You can call me a tightass or whatever you like, but I truly don’t care
I’ve had plenty of fun collecting new and eclectic things!

What’s Behind Microsoft’s .5 Billion Takeover of Skype?
Rumors that Facebook or Cisco would buy Skype were proven wrong on Tuesday when Microsoft struck an $ 8.5 billion deal to acquire the online voice and video chat service. Most analysts welcomed the takeover as a shrewd move on the grounds that it positions Microsoft in a commanding position in the emerging markets of video content and online telephony. Still, considering that Skype’s previous …
