Q&A: what is the best cell phone and plan for me?

I’m kinda new to the whole cell phone thing. I’m not totally devoted to a cell phone, and Im not going to be on it 24/7.I want a cool phone with texting and a camera but i dont need bluetooth and an mp3 player ect…. I want a great plan that isn’t rediculously expensive, ecspecially because im going to be the only one on the plan in my family.

The consumer advocate guy at http://www.clarkhoward.com says that a lot of people on plans don’t get their money’s worth, especially if they don’t use the phone a lot. So why lock yourself into an expensive contract until you use a phone for a few months? That way you will know how much you use it and what you need in a plan.

Right now on Amazon.com you can get the TracFone LG CG225 camera flip phone for $ 49.99 with a $ 15 rebate = $ 34.99. The rebate is EASY! because you fill it out online. And it comes pretty quickly.

Amazon also has other TracFones with good rebates now, also.

www.tracfone.com currently has the same LG 225 camera flip phone with free Double Minutes For Life feature (2 minutes for every 1 you buy) for $ 49.99 with free shipping. (Essentially you are paying the price of the Double Minutes card and getting the phone free.) Go to the Buy Phones page.

Here’s a thread on current TracFone deals:

Cameras in phones are lousy anyway. Neat toys, but they have real cameras to take pictures with. So consider the TracFone V170 silver color because it gets free incoming texting with it.

If you don’t want to bother with the rebate and if having the camera doesn’t really matter, Wal-Mart has the TracFone V170 in a “Super Bonus Value” package for 17.88 that looks like this:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9243352
Part of the Super Bonus Value is a carrying case that comes with it free. And this is a flip phone, but no camera. Also, some of the V170s (usually the silver ones and some of the black ones) get free incoming text messages. The outgoing text messages are only 0.3 minutes on this phone. Most people use texting a lot and really appreciate the incoming free messages. But on most other TracFones the text messages are 0.5 minutes incoming and 0.5 outgoing. The package will tell you on the back how much text messages cost.

If you use TracFone, be sure to use bonus codes for free minutes. You can use them even if you have the Double Minutes feature. To get current bonus codes check out:

Net10 is also owned by TracFone, but Net10 is straight 10 cents a minute. The refills run out in 60 days, but your minutes will roll over when you add a new card. Don’t add refills until your days are about up, though, because the days don’t stack. If you add two cards at the same time, you don’t get 120 days–only the days from the last card you added. Texting is 10 cents incoming and outgoing.

On TracFone, though, the days will stack and most of the cards give 90 days. If you have double minutes on the phone and add a 60 minutes card you can get 60 for the card + 60 for double minutes feature + 60 for a bonus code = 180 mintues for one 60 minutes card that costs $ 20. You can’t always find a bonus code for 60 minutes every time, but you can usually find some sort of bonus code.

Good Luck! I hope you find the perfect phone for you!
