If I Charge my 'Cell Phone' from my Car Cigarret-Lighter outlet, will my Car Battery get Drained?

I am not at all a big Cell Phone user.
I mostly bought me a Cell Phone just incase of any Car Emergencies.
And I would like to leave my Cell in my Car at all times in a secretive place.

But when it comes to Charging up my Cell….will my Car Battery take the weekly Charging of my Cell OK or what ??

Nope, you’re car will be fine, my mom charges her’s all the time in there and we have no battery problems. If you feel safe about it use the charger in your house.

It will use some of your car batteries power, depending on how old your car battery is. If its an old battery it could drain your battery in the extreme cold weather. If the battery is realtively new I wouldn’t worry.

I just saw a commercial on television, sponsored by some kind of environmentalist group. They claimed that a cell phone charger or any charging unit plugged into an outlet was “wasting energy” even when there was NOTHING attached to it. They SHOWED a charging unit plugged into a wall outlet, but with nothing attached to it. My real question is: How do think this is possible(?)–that the charging unit is “wasting energy” when no current being drawn from it?
Dawai- What is using up the DC power to make this process of AC to DC conversion continue?
I’d have to see a current draw on the outlet with a voltage tester–
David–ok, I have just gone around the house checking chargers that have nothing attached. One for my electric razor, and one for my cordless phone base station. They are both cold.
Both charger are plugged into wall outlets, do not have a DC current being drawn and both are cold–this is starting to look like an “urban myth” to me–I don’t have a voltage tester handy but I’ll bet there is no draw on the outlets.
I’ll have to get a multi-meter/tester and actually test this. If my hunch is correct and there really is no draw on the wall outlet, I’ll email mythbusters about it.

Because there is current being drawn from it. The power converter of your cell phone is constantly turning the AC power from your wall to the DC power that your cell phone requires for charging. The same is true for any object with a power converter (those bulky boxes between the device and the wall, sometimes plugged in directly to the wall). Common devices include laptops, some stereos, speakers, etc.

EDIT:

Cordless phones and razors don’t use very much electricity, nor do cell phone chargers. Try feeling the power converter of an LCD monitor or laptop, I guarantee it will be warm.

Electricity is not my expertise, but I believe that the reason it draws power is due to resistance. The converter turns the AC power into DC, and that DC is constantly circulated within the converter if there is no output for it. Energy is lost to resistance and turned into heat. This leads to more AC power being drawn to keep the current going, hence the energy use.

I’m sure if you hook up a Kill-A-Watt or similar device you will see that it is indeed drawing energy, but again if you feel the converter of a device with a greater electricity demand you will be able to see it rather quickly.

Feel it. If it is warm, it is using energy. The warmer it is, the more energy it is using. If it is not producing heat, it is not using energy. This applies to absolutely everything that gets plugged in.

I used a watt meter to see how much standby energy my things were using. The new light weight cel phone chargers didn’t use any energy when the phone was not attached. The older style ones that had the heavy plug used electricity when nothing was on them, things like laptop cords because of the heavy transformer thing used energy even when the laptop wasn’t attached, and used more when the laptop was attached even when the laptop was shut down. My biggest surprise was the ipod docking stations, they all used as much energy to play music as they did when the ipod was not attached. Another thing to think about is electric tooth brushes, I only plug mine in once a week for 8 hours.
