Do you have to use certain cell phones with each cell service provider?

I need a new phone and my cell service provider is cingular/at&t. I want to get a phone on ebay because my phone is broken and we can’t upgrade for a couple of months. Can I get any phone? If not, is there a list of phones that are compatible?

OK guys you want to really look for an ATT GSM phone on EBay if you cant find one you like you can get an UNLOCKED GSM phone … but keep in mind that not all the features may work on the ATT network.
If its a Tmobile phone then the internet and picture messaging definitely wont work.

I want the Best Cell Phone & Plan
NEEDS:
*I do a lot of texting so expanded keyboard would be nice
*I want to synch my To Do List and Calendar between my cell phone and my Mac
DO NOT NEED:
*I do not want to pay extra for a ‘multimedia plan’ that surfs the net and checks email. I just want a voice plan, the option to send text messages and the portability of my To Dos / Appointments

Which Provider would give me the lowest monthly plan rate for voice (I use around 1000 daytime minutes) + texting with the great new phone(s) you’re recommending?

One thing that you totally forgot is COVERAGE area. If you don’t have that, you might as well be carrying a ROCK.

So talk to people around you about coverage area and their service. Don’t listen to the advertising HYPE, talk to real people that really use their cell phones.

Then compare plans with those companies.

Am it a lot of phone that u could choose from starting with the one i have the sidekick u can do the stuff u want but i dont think mine check mail but am u can also get the blackberry i think that one do all u want.It check mail,text,u can call ppl,i have list and calendar and a expanded keyboard.

there are a couple of suggestions for which could help you out. if you get the sidekick 3 from t- mobile you would have to get a data plan in which is a little more expensive plus your minutes plan in which alot of the company’s do require you to have that. the other good phone is the Black Berry in which you also have to enroll in a data plan. my brother has the Palm Treo 650 and i beleive he is no on a data plan and it works out good for him because it is a phone and you can do practically anything with it. its a really nice set up and you could prolly get one at a good price with a new actication. it aslo depends on your carrier. Cingular Carries the Palm Treo 650. Sprint carries the Palm Treo 700p. and verizon carries the palm treo 700w and 700p.
