Verizon INpulse is excellent for anyone that doesn’t want to get a bill each month.
With INpulse you get unlimited nights (from 9:01pm to 5:59am) and unlimited mobile to mobile. It’s 10 cents to talk to someone if it isn’t past 9pm or if the other person doesn’t have Verizon. They take out 99 cents each night.
I personally reckon it’s much cheaper than T-Mobile (had it and was way too expensive), plus the prepaid service comes with unlimited nights and unlimited mobile to mobile which not many prepaid plans do.
The prepaid cards are as followed:
$ 15 – 30 days
$ 30 – 60 days
$ 50 – 60 days
$ 75 – 90 days
$ 150 – 120 days
It’s saved me a lot of money having INpulse other than T-Mobile and the minutes last for a long time.

Virgin and Tracfone per-minute rates run a bit high so I wouldn’t recommend them.
Cingular has free M2M minutes on its $ 0.10/min plot, but you will incur a $ 1 charge on each day that you make or receive a call. Their simple plot is $ 0.25/min, which I would not recommend.
Verizon ($ 0.10/min) has free M2M and nights, but you are charged the $ 1 ($ 0.99) each day in any case of whether you use your phone. That means your plot is automatically gonna run at least $ 30/month. The expiration on your minutes is relatively small compared to Cingular and TMO (terrible if you’re a set alight user). Aside from the free minutes, their best promotion point in my opinion is that they have the best coverage of all nationally carriers.
T-Mobile offers per-minute rates as low as $ 0.10/min if you buy the $ 100 refill. Expiration on the $ 100 refill is one year, and subsequent refills (you get Gold Rewards status after the first $ 100) will extend your expiration to a year from the refill date in any case of the dollar quantity. Brilliant for low usage.
If you want to keep your costs down, I would recommend T-Mobile. In any case, though, you should make sure that the coverage for the provider you are considering is satisfactory (dropped calls or no signal?) in your area.

Which is the most economical and most convenient cell phone deal for middle income college kids? Which phone companies? I am starting college in the fall, and I need a cell phone. Most kids switch in their second year. If any of you know of a fool-proof, no-strings-attached deal, delight let me know. Thanks.

It all depends on everywhere you are located and the service areas of the cell phone providers. Once you find which companies service that area, then you can equate the costs of the plans.
Just remember, it’s too simple to chat and text with all your new friends. Possibly a pre-pay plot is a excellent thought to keep you from breaking your bank.
