What is the best cell phone carrier that doesn't require internet plans with the purchase of a phone?

I was hoping to find a cell phone carrier that does not require you to buy or activate a mobile internet plot/premium internet plot in order to be able to buy the phone. I was looking for a touchscreen but if you reckon that it is cool and a fantastic phone, then delight let me know! Right now i am on U.S. Cellular and each cool phone requires premium internet charges and i do not want that unless last resort.

Verizon has touch screen phones that don’t require a data plot. The enV Touch is one of them.

I’m trying to find a new cell phone carrier for my mom- she has a contract that expires in a couple months with Cingular. She doesn’t like any of the major networks, but she needs something everywhere she can use the phone pretty much anywhere on the Eastern Coast. I’ve looked, and I reckon we get excellent coverage in our are for them all except for T-Mobile. It needs to cost what it says it will- that was my mom’s major complaint with Cingular, and it would help if we could get a excellent family plot so that I can have a cell phone in case of emergencies.
Oh, and the family plot bit is NOT necessary, though, just nice to have.

No phone plot costs what it is advertised to cost because there are a lot of taxes that add nearly 18% to the bill. Another conundrum may have been overage – if she used more minutes than she had. You could go with a prepaid plot – that way you never get a bill, you just buy a card and add it to your account.

It really depends on the area you’re in. In eastern North Carolina, US Cellular is the best. In other parts of the state, Verizon works better. Some say Alltel is excellent. What you would want to do is go to one of the specialty stores that represent numerous carriers and tell them you want to take a phone for a test drive. You want to make sure it works from your mom’s house and the area she travels most. Digital service such as Sprint and Cingular are excellent when they work. But they don’t have many towers in rural areas. Excellent luck. Also make sure you get a excellent phone. Motorola phones seem to work best from my experience. LG phones aren’t so fantastic. Test drive one of those when you’re trying out the service. But talk to someone in your area. Since the service level is different in different areas of the country.

I lived/went/toschool/travelled down much of the east coast and my Alltel phone worked just fine for the most part. My friends with Verizon always had service (except in a very remote part of New Jersey and in the backwoods of the Virginia coast.) I’m sure if you or your mom went to a cell phone kiosk, a representative for the company would show you a map of their service areas. Most companies these days offer comparable plans which include family bundles and nationally long distance. As for cost, be sure to read the fine print- cell phone companies make their money of stupid people who sign contracts and miss the “activation and service charge” and stuff like that.

Phone calls and texts absorb truckers’ attention
It doesn’t take long for Joe Yeggy to spot a trucker on the phone. “I see truck drivers that are texting going down the road,” he said. “I was behind one yesterday who spent more time on the shoulder than on the highway — and when I caught up with him, (I saw) he was on the phone.”
