Signage thoughts for reducing drivers’ cell phone usage
hands free cell phone devices

Just 2 thoughts for street signs that I’d like to have made for my town, which has an alarmingly high density of iPhones and such. I’m getting really, really sick of drivers with phones attached to their ears, and extra sick of those that appear to be texting or fussing with iTunes playlists. People on handsfree devices are just as terrible. It’s the equivalent of by a straw to drink your martini instead of picking the drink up with your hands — you’re still equally drunk whether you’ve used your hands or not. Banning cell phone use is doubtless a futile goal, but having some catchy signage might really get to people in the Borough.

By the way, I wish all vehicles had a set alight on top that flashed whenever the driver was doing something with his/her cell phone. Then other drivers and pedestrians could be properly terrified and could take evasive action. I also wish that calls originating from moving vehicles would control hidden data that indicated the caller was pouring; then I could choose not to answer the call. Cell phones are increasingly house-aware, so it might be simple to automatically block calls made from moving phones, or at least indicate that the person was moving very, very quick (via a rotating icon, e.g.). I could see a corporate entity doing this to get a savings on their insurance bills.

Here’s a recent NYT article on the conundrum: www.nytimes.com/2009/07/19/technology/19distracted.html

Can you rub out it off of one phone and then add it to another? Produce I’m trying to connect my mom’s ancient one with my phone and it is not picking it up. We deleted it off of hers and enabled my bluetooth and everything.

You can do it, but you need to PAIR it to each phone you want to use it with.
The instructions tell you how to do it with each different brand of headset or whatever.
