Japanese trains have few of the talkers that make rides on North American buses and airplanes so annoying. Air time is expensive, so people use e-mail instead. Not SMS, but full Internet-compatible* e-mail. As a spam prevention measure, though, providers offer settings for cutting the phone off from the Internet, accepting mail only from other cell phone providers.

FWIW, the digit of doodads attached to her cell phones indicates how lonely she is.

優先席(yūsenseki) = "priority seat" for elderly, disabled, pregnant, etc.
付近(fukin) = "neighborhood, vicinity"
ケイタイ(keitai) = 携帯電話(keitai denwa) = "portable telephone"

My friend is 93 and has some visual impairment (macular degeneration) and hearing impairment. He needs a cell phone with few bells and whistles that is simple to see and simple to use. All he needs is to be able to make and receive calls, an take up book, and voice mail. Naturally, cost of the phone, accessories, and service are considerations. He also needs excellent coverage, whether in our small town or in the outlying areas. What excellent and / or terrible experiences have you had with providing such a need?

I don’t know a particular brand that would be simple to see, but do know that if you have a hearing loss and hearing aids a phone with bluetooth works well because you can listen with both ears through the hearing aids with a t-coil turned on. You would also need to have a neckloop with bluetooth capability. I’ve found that being able to listen with both ears increases the chances of understanding.
