Q&A: I want an inexpensive cell phone for my kids that lets you track where they are. Which is best?

My kids are getting to an age where they need a cell phone. I want something inexpensive but that will let me be able to identify where they are if something ever happened to them. What is the best, but least expensive option?

i dont know where u r located.. but as far as india is concerned a nokia 1110 series should be more than enough… which costs about 40-50$ in indian rupees for an unlocked handset..

I’ve found that any http://www.mobilebee.com or http://www.myworldphone.com have the best prices for phones, I’ve used them both so I know they are reliable. as far as tracking your kids I reckon your best bet would be result phones that use GPS and have built in software. Excellent Luck!

they have gps, but, it does cost a small more, but if you are looking for something to monitor where your kids are you will need to pay extra for the gps feature with any carrier.

plus its fantastic cause they have call control. they define it as:

No I bought my 10 year ancient a real cell phone (an LG shine). I read terrible reviews about the firefly. He takes his phone to school in his backpack (turned off) and is only supposed to call if it is an emergency. It makes me feel better knowing that he has it and we have not had any emergencies yet.

EDIT*** Allow me to clarify why we felt he needs it. I have to be at work at 8:00am. My husband has to be at work earlier. The bus comes to our street at 7:35 to pick my son up. I have to drop him off at the corner, take my younger sons to daycare and then be at work before 8:00. My son’s school considers anyone dropped off before 7:40 as a before school care and will charge you daily for this service. There were two occasions last year that I dropped my son off at the corner (with additional parents present) and the bus was any late or did not come. On both occasions my son accepted a ride from another parent and told em about it later. I do not have a conundrum with this but I want to be informed if it were to happen again. I do not let my son roam the locality and not know where he is at. The phone is only to call me if there is an emergency.

My oldest is 7 and youngest will be 6 months. My oldest does not have one, and probably won’t get one since I don’t feel it is needed. During the day he is in school, I pick him up after school and he is always at home with me or my husband. I don’t allow him to go anywhere without one of us with him so it is not necessary or apt for a child his age.

My friend gave her son one when he was 5 years ancient! Reason life is that he is allowed to play outdoors by himself and is often at his grandparents house. I guess my friend is comfortable with the thought of him life without her often so for safety she provides him with a phone so she can reach him whenever she needs to. At 5 years ancient he had a firefly, now he is 8 years ancient and is using her ancient cell phone. He carries it with him whenever he is out by himself.
