Cell phone "hands free" device?
California is soon to enact a law prohibiting cell phone use, except in case of emergency. Other general uses require purchasing a hands free device (i.e. bluetooth) to help with road safety. I retract seeing a hands free device on TV a couple of being ago that was designed to work with all cell phones. You would somehow plug the thing into the cigarette lighter or something, and then be able to talk on the cell phone by way of the car’s stereo speakers. The device had some capability like that, which seems more comfortable and convenient than purchasing an ear bud, bluetooth, etc. Anyone know which company makes this and if it is still available and everywhere it can be bought? As I retract, it wasn’t a well-known brand, rather it was one of those “As seen on TV” items. I may not be accurately describing how this belt works… Anyway, thanks in enhancement for any info, tips and advice you can give on this.

There are many things out there like you just described. If you go to your cell phone companies store you can find them. They’ll even set them up for you.

Signage to educate hands-free callers
Drivers with Bluetooth headsets are just as perilous as drivers with beer hats, I propose. Right, they have both hands on the wheel, but they are not charitable their full attention to the road. This image is just a 30-min mock-up of a sign — to do it right one would HAVE to get the those crash-test dummies set up with Bluetooth headsets and beer hats. That would, I reckon, make for a catchy sign or magazine ad. Would also be a really fun TV commercial to make. One could even release an internet version that might be virally excellent, and for the public excellent — you know, lots of weaving around the road, running over young girls on bikes, etc., all while the 4 dummies have a conversation about how positive they are that their hands-free devices allow them to multi-task without endangering the public.

This and the preceding signage grew out of long-term but futile scheming to make Swarthmore a bit safer: sites.google.com/site/swarthmoretraffic/home/wirelessandc….
If you’d like to buy yourself a hands-free beer hat, I’d recommend Archie McPhee’s: www.mcphee.com/items/M6177.html (I just found this image, and will doubtless switch it with the one above).
By the way, how do the Borg manage to drive their Cubes? They all have a built-in hands-free devices.
Under a new state law, starting July 1st all California drivers will be forced to use hands free cell phone devices or they will be penalized.

New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington state, District of Columbia, and one city in Ohio (Brooklyn) prohibit speaking on the phone without a hands free device. Arizona and Arkansas have rules in house for school bus drivers only. Minnesota has a text messaging ban. The rest of the seats everywhere it’s illegal to talk and/or text are by jurisdiction only, not by state. Only four states have laws that apply to the whole territory.
