I know for a fact that wireless, landline type phones can be picked up by police scanners but can a cell phone be picked up as well? I have 2 neighbors who are cops and I know they have scanners at home and am worried about my privacy.

Cell phones can be heard – by the use of special equipment. Did it all the time on the job in high drug trafficing neighborhoods. Any transmission over the airways can be heard and recorded.

Not … exactly.

A cell phone uses digital technology transmitted over the airwaives. The signal is sent to a cell tower, usually to a satellite, and back.

Consequently, the signal can be easily intercepted … but not usually on a police scanner. The police can, though, have devices to intercept such signals, even in their car. This is why the courts have said that there is “no expectation of privacy” in the use of cellular telephones, and have not afforded them the same protection against wiretaps (which traditionally require a warrant) as land-line phones.

Further, these signals CAN be inadvertently picked up by another cell phone or police scanner, as they use the airwaves and can bleed into the wavelength for those devices. This is why, on occasion, you may be on the phone and hear the conversation of another user.

do you really reckon your 2 cop neighbors are gonna waste there time listening to you phone conversation. unless you are some huge time dope dealer then you should have nothing to worry about. you just being to paranoid.

Depends on the scanner. I have one that is no longer available to the public since it picks up 900MH and I hear cell phone conversations all the time.
