GSM is the grown-up mobile tracking technology that uses the phone’s unique IMEI digit to traingulate its house in the cell phone network. This was (and still is) one of the time-tested ways for operators to locate a lost or stolen cell phone.

GPS is the newer tracking technology present in smartphones like Android, Backberry & iPhone. It makes use of digtal maps (Google maps, Google Latitude) and compatible apps to pin-point a person or phone’s house in real time.
